O Canada! Considering the Impact of Hosting the Olympics New York Times (blog)
Materials | Computers with Internet joining and research materials, detailed map of Canada
Warm-up | Before you begin this lesson, look at a map of Canada together. Ask: What is the dissimilarity between provinces and territories ? What are Canada’s ten provinces and three territories ? What other countries border on or are very alongside to Canada? Where is Vancouver ? Why is Vancouver in the news right now?
Next, tell students to imagine that they are advertising executives working for the Canadian Tourism Subdivision, assigned to “pitch” Canada to the rest of the world to encourage people to go, to capitalize on interest in Canada generated during the Olympics.
First, lead a brainstorming session in which students untenanted-associate about Canada – with facts and impressions – and list all ideas on the table. Then put students in pairs to develop a basic advertising pitch.
They should think about these questions: If Canada were a output or brand, what would its characteristics be? What words, phrases and images seem to describe or capture Canada? What aspects of the motherland’s geography, culture, etc. would they want to feature and highlight in an advertising campaign? Pairs should use the ideas from the brainstorm and their answers to these questions to sire some ideas about the “brand” of Canada and how they would “pitch” it.
To convergence their work, you might have each pair create a simple bumper sticker, slogan, logo or root print advertisement designed to interest people in visiting Canada.
If time permits, you might show students some examples of other tourism provisions advertising slogans .
Have pairs share their ideas. Then ask: What more would you need and want to know about Canada to absolute this task effectively?
Related | In the article “Winter Wonder Brand,” Michael Ignatieff explores how nations use the Olympics to “make their identities” as well as how their hosting style reflects national ethos:
The Olympics have done their part in replacing war with frolic as the way nations earn respect. Modern nations compete by branding their identities, and hosting the Olympic games is the biggest branding moment a nation ever gets. The Beijing Games unveiled China as a global power. The Rio Games in 2016 will do the same for Brazil. The Sochi Winter Games in 2014 will showcase the raw power of Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
If you’re not difficult to demonstrate raw power or announce your arrival on the global stage, however, hosting the Games presents a invite. We Canadians are immensely proud of our country, but we try to be soft-spoken about it, so we aren’t looking for the Vancouver Games to be a florid exercise in self-promotion. Instead, we want to demonstrate that we’re a people the world can count on. We’re proud that we brought in the Games on yet and on budget. The venues are ready. Apart from some nail-biting about whether there will be enough real snow for the low-altitude venues, there have been no last-split second panics. The Olympics let us tell the world: Ask us to do a job, and we get it done right.
Explain to students that they will choose (or be assigned) a interrupt research project on an aspect of Canada. As a class, brainstorm a list of topics and transcribe them on the board.
The Learning Network lesson Neighborly Interests provides a detailed record:
Health Care Government Same-Sex Marriage Drug Use Military Economics Political Parties Drilling Geography/Environment HistoryInvite students to add their own ideas to the list. For example, they may requirement to add sections on such topics as Arts and Entertainment, International Relations, Sports and Leisure, and even Demographics. They may also craving to incorporate Olympics-related topics, such as Canadian Athletes, the Architecture of the Games, or Environmental Bump of the Games, Visiting Vancouver , and so on.
After settling on the topics, assign or allow small groups to select one topic from the list to research. They should work together to develop at least 5 solid guiding questions that they will inspect. If students need help developing questions, the Neighborly Interests lesson has many to prefer from for each of the topics.
When research is complete, have each group present its work. Wrap up by discussing the portent of what they discovered about Canada. Questions to ask include these: What are the most interesting facts you learned from your group’s investigate and the other presentations? What, if anything, surprised you about Canada? Why do you think we usually hear little about Canada in intelligence reports, especially given the fact that it is our neighbor? Why don’t we study Canada more in worldwide history and social studies? Should we? Did your image of Canada change from the beginning of the lesson? How would you revise the ad campaign you sketched out earlier, given what you found out?
