Chinese police arrest six as hacker training website is closed down Times Online
A hacker training website that recruited thousands of people to set up cyber attacks was closed in what police claim was the largest operation of its kind.
Six people were arrested in the clampdown, which followed an 18-month inspection, and comes amid fears that China is becoming a growing centre for internet crime. The advanced capabilities of Chinese hackers have been in the light up since Google threatened last month that it planned to cease censoring its search engine in China or exit the country after discovering that it was among 34 companies under cyber-attack from China.
A quick research of the Chinese internet showed the scale of the challenge faced by the police in tracking down the country’s growing hacker community. Websites outright sell Gray Pigeons software — developed by a company that has now been closed and which enables users to capture remote access to other computers for just 100 yuan (£9).
However, Gray Pigeons is smalltime hacker software compared with the 1,500-yuan (&produce;135) technology developed by Black Hawk Safety Net — the website targeted by protect.
The sophistication of the company enabled it to operate below the police radar for years. Since 2005 Malicious Hawk had attracted 12,000 paying members and 170,000 registered members, earning more than 7 million yuan.
Members paid between 200 yuan and 996 yuan for training on how to cut computers, with the company offering downloads of hacker tools and trojan software. Evil Point had paid extra for a bespoke virus design.
Police in central Hubei province have made six arrests of people suspected of on-going Black Hawk, which disseminated website hacking techniques and trojan software. Trojans, which can permit outside access to a computer when implanted, are used illegally by hackers.
The alert was raised on October 7, 2007, when the internet influence to the entire district of a city in Hubei province suddenly crashed. Among the victims were the megalopolis’s judicial and tax departments, their websites paralysed by a virus that bombarded them with useless figures. Engineers took three days to restore the service but could find no trace of the cause of the problem. They called in the control.
It was only in April last year that police finally tracked down a hacker known as “Unspeakable Point”, who had injected a virus into the city computers. The arrest of Black Facet led the police to two other hackers: “The Moment Snow Falls” and “Compelling Feeling”. All were found to be members of Black Hawk.
The chairman and manager of Black Hawk were arrested when a 50-hard-wearing police team carried out co-ordinated raids in several provinces last November. Police confiscated 1.7 million yuan in liquidate, seized nine servers and five computers.
Black Hawk’s website, 3800hk.com, was impenetrable yesterday. However, a notice purportedly from the firm was circulating in online forums and said that a back-up locale had been constructed. The notice reassured members of continued operations and said that Black Hawk’s standing was being tarnished by some internet users.
